Do You Have Nappturosity????

Nappturosity, by Erinshell Anthony is an easily accessible and resourceful digital e-book for those with sisterlocks, dreadlocks, and natural hair. After I retrieved my user name and password from my e-mail to unlock the book, I was pleasantly surprised at all the really practical and useful information it contained.

At first...a skeptic

Before I bought it to review, I had an idea that it would contain stuff that I already knew. And, since it is also a part of an affiliate program, I was a little skeptical.

Also, I usually have a distrust of books that aren’t printed on paper, but Nappturosity was a pleasant surprise. As I clicked through it, I learned a lot, even though I have been natural for over ten years and thought I had heard and seen it all.

Comprised of four sections called principles, Anthony has done her research and offers the new or expert natural so much information you will find yourself often referencing this book.

Principle 1: We Develop a Relationship with Our Hair

Addressing the emotional side of having a healthy relationship with your natural hair, Anthony suggests that naturals create a plan and have hair goals from the beginning.

If you are shopping for a natural hair stylist and don't know where to start aside from having a 32 state and international directory in the last section, Anthony helps you choose a natural hair stylist and includes suggested interview questions when you first visit.

She urges readers to investigate a potential stylist. Ask for a portfolio, and experience. Don’t let the stylist be the only one asking questions.

I’ve walked into places and had to tell the stylist to not use a comb attachment when blow drying, but to use a paddle brush, or watch the stylist like a hawk when trimming and be ready to walk out if any flim flam (anything I didn’t ask for) happens.

She also discusses the connection between health, whole foods and hair growth. She attributes wheat grass, to her increased hair growth. And, well, I feel another challenge coming on. (Read about my last one involving emu oil) I’ve never had wheat grass, yet am willing to try it.

Also included in different chapters are audio and printed interviews with professionals in the natural hair field, such as Anita Grant, Kaya Casper, editor of Naturally You magazine and Thierry Baptiste, master loctitian.

Principle 2: We Appreciate Our Texture

She further talks about appreciating our hair’s texture and with one simple question allows readers to determine their hair texture. No lengthy quizzes needed. Just one question does it.

Do you have sisterlocks or dreadlocks and are looking for maintenance information? Included are options and tips for both styles along with mistakes to avoid.

Newbie and expert loc wearers will appreciate her information about palmrolling and retwisting sessions and the varied phases of locs. If you are thinking of transitioning to dreadlocks or sisterlocks, Nappturosity contains the information to prepare you.

She also created a table that gives you an already laid out hair regimen. It's all there, no researching necessary.

In this section, one thing that I didn’t agree with was one of her myths about natural hair and it’s the one we hear a lot. Anthony presents the myth: “Trimming my hair is not necessary now that I’m natural” I actually agree with this. And I know a lot of people disagree with me. However, I do believe the key to growth is not damaging your hair so you don’t have to trim it. If you have heat damage such as split ends, trichorrhexhis nodosa, or trichoclasis, by all means trim your ends, but if you’re not damaging your hair, leave it alone so it can grow.

While we can agree to disagree, I have to say, I wish I had this book years ago when I first decided to transition.

Principle 3: We Know Our Ingredients

For me, this was the jackpot. If you are already natural and too busy to even think about shopping for individual products one by one, Anthony creates a chart in this section listing individual companies and products to try for each type of product like shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, and so on.

Anthony even has recipes for those who want to strike out on their own and make their own natural conditioners, pre-poos, shampoos, and rinses with instructions and links to ingredient suppliers. She practically does all the work for you!

Recently I realized a favorite product of mine contained parabens, which are preservatives. They have been a hot topic lately regarding their safety even though they are pretty much in every cosmetic and beauty product we use. Anthony includes them in her ten red flag ingredients to watch out for when purchasing hair products.

Principle 4: We are Fabulous!

Looking for pictures of natural hair styles, dreadlocks and sisterlocks? Included in this section are professionally shot pictures of all three of these styles and a directory of natural hair salons in 32 states including an international listing of natural hair salons in London, Germany, Amsterdam, Ontario and Italy.

I really thought this book was just going to be a feel good e-book about why natural hair is so fabulous, but it was actually way more than that. Wherever you are on your natural hair journey, from newbie to guru, this book is a well written and thoroughly researched resource of helpful hints for all naturals.
