The Ingredients for Natural Hair Growth

Natural hair growth and walnuts go together. Containing a wealth of vitamins and minerals , these nuts support healthy hair growth and scalp protection. Walnuts contain the following:

  • Calcium - aids in the development of the keratin protein which makes up our curls.  [1 , pg. 366]

  • Vitamin E – provides anti-oxidant protection and enhances oxygen uptake by hair follicles [1, pg. 365]

  • Alpha linolenic acid (ALA—a  plant-based Fatty acid from the omega 3 family)  helps in blood circulation and hair and cell growth and increasing nutrient absorption at the site of the hair follicles. [2]

  • Folates –  brings oxygen to tissues that build and grow hair and prevents shedding. [1, pg. 365]

  • Magnesium - cell division, and growth of dermal papilla cells. These cells are responsible for the “generation of hair” [4]

  • Copper contributes to the strength of your hair strands. Copper deficiency leads to weak and brittle hair and premature graying[1 , pg. 366]

Also, walnuts have been studied to increase cognitive performance specifically in young adults. [6] That’s a lot for a nut to do. So let’ see how we can incorporate it into our diets.

I always will advocate getting your vitamins by food rather than supplements. Whole foods are the most reliable way to get vitamins directly into your body where they’re needed.

There is no need to read an ingredient list and the supplement market isn’t regulated that strictly so it’s hard to tell how much of a stated ingredient is actually in a dosage.[7] I will only take supplements  recommended by my doctor, like multivitamins, since the prescription is usually based on test results and evidence.

Let’s look at 5 ways to add walnuts to our diets and hair routines.

1. Put it in Your Salad

I love making salads and now, thanks to my brother-in-law, I use spinach (which is another super food for your hair) as the base. I then make a modified Greek salad mix with

  • Crushed Walnuts,
  • Cucumbers,
  • Spinach,
  • Red Onion,
  • Feta,
  • Black Olives,
  • Broccoli, and
  • Olive Garden dressing (the best).

This is a nutrient packed salad. Most of the stuff is organic where I can get it. Newsflash. BJs sells organic spinach for $4.29. I think BJ’s has really cheap green vegetables especially broccoli florets, which I dump into the salad as well.

2. Drop them on Oatmeal

I do an overnight soak with rolled oats, almond milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Then I put walnuts, sunflower seeds, stewed blueberries and strawberries on my oatmeal in the morning. I have also stewed frozen berries as well if fresh berries aren't available at the store.

3. Make an Energy Ball

Combine almond butter, cinnamon, maple syrup, goji berries, crushed walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and roll those suckas into snack balls. Lyzabeth Lopez has a modified complete recipe on YouTube

Parfait Anyone?

Make a yogurt parfait with plain Greek yogurt, honey, fruit (strawberry is the best), and then top it with walnuts and vanilla nut granola. I love the crunchy texture with the yogurt!!

5. Use it on your Scalp

Cold pressed walnut oil should contain all of the amazing attributes of the walnut itself. You can use it for your skin and hair. To promote hair and scalp health,  apply walnut oil on your scalp and massage it in as a pre-poo, or use it as a regular scalp massage treatment.

You can also use it on your hair, focusing on the ends; The oil contains iron, zinc, and copper. I think I feel a 3 month hair challenge coming on.

Cash Back for Walnut Oil

Lately I have been using Ebates when I make online purchases. If you haven’t heard of them, this company gives you cash money to shop

If you have to shop online why not get $10 free dollars and get paid for something you were going to do anyway. This is a great service to use especially if you are using a gift card. Get money for free money!

Currently, Swanson is giving 5% cash back on your order if you click on their link through Ebates. So you would click on Ebates.com. Create an account, then search for Swanson within the Ebates web site. Then click on the link to go to Swanson's. Easy peasy!

Also if you refer a friend, you can make $25 cash which is a total of $35 free dollars + the 5% cash back on your Swanson order for doing essentially something you were going to do anyway.

I like that you get cash and not a gift card or points.

So if you want to receive $10 on your order plus money back from Swanson, shop here through Ebates.

I do make affiliate income which supports the web site when you use the above link. I personally like Swanson because they sell way more than vitamins.

They sell herbal teas, Giovanni hair products, castor oil, jojoba, vitamin E oil, and coconut oil all at a discount. The list is endless.

So, have you tried walnut oil? Or incorporated it into your diets? What were your experiences? Share them here!
